The American Revolution Had Many Important Events. Name One. Civics Question 80

2 min read Updated

Bunker Hill, the Declaration of Independence, or Washington crossing the Delaware. Here is what happened at each one and the safest answer to give the officer.

Name one: the Battle of Bunker Hill, the Declaration of Independence, or Washington crossing the Delaware, which led to the Battle of Trenton.

Question 80 says the American Revolution had many important events and asks you to name one. The Battle of Bunker Hill, the Declaration of Independence and Washington crossing the Delaware are accepted answers, and so are the Battle of Saratoga, the Valley Forge encampment and the Battle of Yorktown. One event answers the question.

What Happened at Each One

Bunker Hill, 1775. British troops attacked colonial forces dug in on high ground near Boston. The British took the hill and lost many soldiers doing it. The fight showed both sides that the colonists would stand and fight a trained army.

The Declaration of Independence, 1776. Congress adopted it on July 4. A revolt inside the British empire became a war between two countries.

Washington crossing the Delaware, 1776. On Christmas night, Washington moved his army across the icy Delaware River in boats. The next morning his troops surprised and beat the enemy force at Trenton, New Jersey. It came after months of American losses.

Saratoga, 1777. An American victory in New York that convinced France to enter the war on the American side.

Valley Forge, 1777 to 1778. The winter camp in Pennsylvania where Washington’s army survived cold and hunger and came out better trained.

Yorktown, 1781. The British army surrendered in Virginia, which ended the fighting.

Why the Officer Asks This

The question closes out the Revolution on the list. It sits right after the questions about the Declaration, so you have already learned one of the answers to it.

How to Remember One Event

Use the answer you have learned twice already. The Declaration of Independence is on this list, and it is also the answer to question 78 about who wrote it and question 79 about when it was adopted. Three questions, one document.

If you would rather picture something, hold the crossing: a river full of ice, boats in the dark, an army landing on the far bank at night.

What to Say on Test Day

Say “the Declaration of Independence.” Then stop.

Bunker Hill, Washington crossing the Delaware, Saratoga, Valley Forge and Yorktown are marked correct too, so use whichever you have practiced. Name one event and leave the story alone.
