Citizenship Test Online: What You Can and Cannot Do in 2026

7 min read Updated 2026-08-10

You cannot take the US citizenship test online. It is oral and in person at a USCIS field office. Here is what online practice can do, and the three claims that mark a scam.

You cannot take the US citizenship test online. The civics and English tests happen in person, at a USCIS field office, with an officer sitting across from you. Anyone selling an online version of the actual test is selling something that does not exist.

What you can do online is everything that comes before it. Study the official question bank, run practice tests, drill vocabulary, and rehearse the interview. That is where the online part of this process genuinely helps.

The real US citizenship test is oral and in person at a USCIS field office. Online tools are for practice only. Use them to drill the official 128 questions, run timed mock tests, and rehearse the reading and writing sentences. Check your Form N-400 filing date to know whether you study 100 questions or 128.

What’s New in 2026 for the Citizenship Test Online

The online study material split into two versions, and only one of them applies to you.

USCIS is implementing the 2025 naturalization civics test to align with Executive Order 14161. Applications filed before October 20, 2025 use the 2008 test: up to 10 questions from a list of 100, passing at 6. Applications filed on or after that date use the 2025 test: up to 20 questions from a bank of 128, passing at 12.

The USCIS Citizenship Resource Center now labels its online material by version. There are separate interactive practice tests, flash cards, and audio files for Civics (2008 version) and Civics (2025 Version).

Independent study sites have been slower. A page dated 2026 can still be running the 2008 question set underneath, so check the question count rather than the date on the page.

Why the Citizenship Test Is Not Available Online

The format itself rules it out.

The civics test is oral. A USCIS officer asks questions out loud and listens to your answers, with no screen and no answer choices. Your ability to speak and understand English is judged during that same conversation, while the officer walks through your Form N-400 with you.

The reading test asks you to read one of three sentences aloud. The writing test asks you to write one of three sentences by hand, to dictation. Both are done in the room.

The interview also does two other jobs that cannot happen remotely. The officer places you under oath and confirms the answers on your application are still true, and checks documents you brought with you.

So the appointment is not a test that happens to be in person. It is an interview with a test inside it.

What You Can Do With a Citizenship Test Online

Practice is where online tools do real work.

Learn the official question bank. USCIS publishes all 128 questions and answers as document M-1778, and the older 100 in pocket study guide M-1122. Both are free downloads.

Run practice tests. USCIS offers free interactive practice tests, and there are plenty of independent ones. Treat them as diagnostics rather than as the exam.

Drill with audio. USCIS publishes MP3 files of the questions and answers. Hearing them asked aloud is closer to the interview than reading them.

Practice the vocabulary. The official reading and writing vocabulary lists cover every word that can appear in the English portion.

Check the answers that change. The USCIS civics test updates page carries the current answers for questions about who holds office.

How to Use Online Practice Without Fooling Yourself

Online practice has one built-in flaw, and it is easy to work around.

A screen offers you answers. The officer will not. Every multiple choice quiz you take is training recognition, which is a much easier skill than recall, and it feels like progress right up until the moment you have to produce an answer from nothing.

The fix costs nothing. Say your answer out loud before you look at the options. If you cannot produce it unprompted, mark it wrong no matter which box you then clicked.

Do the same with order. Study sites like to group questions by topic because it looks tidy, but the topic itself becomes a hint. Shuffle so that a question about the Constitution can be followed by one about Veterans Day.

And take at least a few sessions away from the screen entirely. Print the list, have someone else read from it, and answer across a table. That is the format you are actually preparing for.

What Actually Happens at the In-Person Test

Knowing the shape of the appointment takes most of the fear out of it.

You arrive at a USCIS field office, clear security, and wait. An officer calls your name, introduces themselves, and places you under oath. Then they review your Form N-400 with you, question by question.

The civics test follows. For the 2025 test, a USCIS system randomly selects 20 questions from the 128 and the officer asks them out loud. You need 12 correct, and the officer stops asking once you get there.

Then the English portion: one sentence read aloud out of three, and one sentence written out of three.

You leave holding Form N-652, Notice of Interview Results, which records whether your case was granted, continued, or denied. If you do not pass a portion, USCIS generally schedules a second interview within 60 to 90 days and retests you only on the part you missed.

A Four-Week Online Study Plan for the Citizenship Test

Online tools work best inside a plan with an end date.

Week 1: Read the list once, then start covering answers. Download M-1778 if you filed on or after October 20, 2025, or M-1122 if you filed before it. Work through one section a day and say every answer aloud.

Week 2: Add audio and shuffle. Play the USCIS MP3 files during the parts of your day when you cannot read. In your sitting sessions, mix questions from all three topic groups rather than working a block at a time.

Week 3: Start full practice runs. Twenty random questions, spoken, scored honestly, most days. Add the reading and writing sentences two or three times this week so the English portion stops being unfamiliar.

Week 4: Drill misses and go offline. Spend most of your time on the questions you keep dropping. Have someone read the questions to you across a table at least twice, because that is the format of the appointment.

In the final week, open the USCIS civics test updates page and confirm the answers about who currently holds office. Those move with elections and appointments, and they are the answers most likely to be stale in anything you downloaded a month earlier.

Spotting an Online Citizenship Test Scam

A few claims should end your visit immediately.

Claim 1: “Take the official test online.” No such thing exists. The civics and English tests are administered in person by a USCIS officer.

Claim 2: “Guaranteed questions” or a leaked list. The questions are already public. USCIS publishes all of them, so there is nothing to leak and nothing to sell.

Claim 3: “Pay to skip the interview.” Nobody can waive the naturalization interview for a fee. The exemptions that exist are the 65/20 age and residence rule and a medical disability exception on Form N-648, both requested through USCIS.

Free official material covers the whole test. Anything charging you for access to the questions themselves is charging for a public document.

FAQ

Can I take the US citizenship test online in 2026?

No. The civics and English tests are given in person by a USCIS officer at a field office, as part of your naturalization interview. Online tools are for practice only, and USCIS publishes several of them free.

Are the USCIS online practice tests the same as the real test?

The questions match, but the format does not. Online practice shows you a screen, sometimes with answer choices. The real civics test is spoken, with no options offered and nothing in front of you.

Where can I practice the citizenship test online for free?

The USCIS Citizenship Resource Center publishes free interactive practice tests, flash cards, MP3 audio, and the full question lists in documents M-1778 and M-1122. It costs nothing and it is the same material officers use.

Can I do the citizenship interview by video?

Not as a routine option. The naturalization interview is scheduled at a USCIS field office. Any accommodation request, including for disability, is handled by USCIS as part of your case rather than arranged privately.

How many questions will I be asked in person?

Up to 20 from the bank of 128 if you filed on or after October 20, 2025, with 12 correct to pass. Up to 10 from the list of 100 if you filed earlier, with 6 correct to pass.

Verdict: Using the Citizenship Test Online the Right Way

There is no citizenship test online, and that is worth knowing before you spend money looking for one. The test is spoken, in person, and run by a USCIS officer who is also checking your application.

Online is where the preparation lives. Download the official list that matches your filing date, drill it out loud rather than by clicking, shuffle the order, and run full length practice tests until 20 random questions feel ordinary.

Then close the laptop and have somebody ask you the questions across a table. That is the only rehearsal that matches the room you will be sitting in.
